About these stories
These are real stories, shared by whānau across Aotearoa. Names and personal details have been changed for privacy reasons.
We are honoured by the koha these storytellers have given in sharing their experiences to help others.
Our kaupapa
The aim of this project is to share real stories of change, to encourage whānau to have their own brave conversations, and how to make changes to ease up on their drinking.
Our learnings
In 2018 Te Hiringa Hauora/Health Promotion Agency began working with Māori to record personal stories about alcohol and its impact on whānau.
We found that while many people believe that they have cut back, they are still drinking at levels that put them at risk of long-term physical and social harm.
Māori communities told us that hearing personal stories about drinking less encourages them to have brave conversations in their whānau about the role of alcohol, and to think about making a change in their own lives.
Share your story
We are continuing to record stories of change. If you are interested in sharing your story, or would like to know more about this mahi, please contact kia.ora@alcoholjourneys.org.nz.
Te Hiringa Hauora/Health Promotion Agency
This work is part of the alcohol health and wellbeing mahi at Te Hiringa Hauora. We are committed to Te Tiriti and to reducing the historic and systemic inequalities experienced by Māori, particularly the disproportionate harm from alcohol.
